In an attempt to optimise the limited land resource in Singapore and to improve the living conditions of her people, the Government has taken steps to clear slums and to redevelop areas with high-rise buildings with essential facilities. It is obvious that urban renewal has resulted in cleaner environrnental via better infrastructure and amenities. It is, however, difficult to distinguish this finding in every case of urban redevelopment. People affected are often faced with economic, social and environmental repercussions. They may be better or worse off after resettlement in the new. It is thus important to investigate these consequences to measure the success of urban renewal.
