This dissertation examines the nature of Micro-zoning Plans. These are plans prescribing the permissible building heights (in terms of the number of storeys) within selected areas of the island of Singapore. A review of the various types of development plans in Singapore is made to determine the relationship between Micro-zoning Plans and the other plans. Micro-zoning Plan Part XXXIV (covering the Joo Chiat -- Katong Area) is taken as a reference for the discussion of some of the problems and difficulties which may arise in planning areas subject to these plans. Some recommendations are made. The dissertation also attempts to answer the question of whether Micro-zoning Plans have achieved their objectives and more importantly, to what extent have they assisted developers, architects and planners in the development of these areas.
