Title: | URBAN CONSERVATION IN SINGAPORE | Authors: | LIM BEE YORK | Issue Date: | 1983 | Citation: | LIM BEE YORK (1983). URBAN CONSERVATION IN SINGAPORE. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Through the rapid pace of urban redevelopment, Singapore is loosing its old heritage. The cause of this phenomenon may be attributed to the economic criteria which have been given priority in all major decisions in the development process and which have over-ridden longer term environmental and sociological consequences. The aim of this study is to find out whether there is a need for conservation in Singapore. Such a need is ascertained through the study on the impact of economic and urban development on social, environment and tourism. It is also the aim of the author to study whether we can afford conservation, bearing in mind we are a small city-state. Through the study of future trend of economic and urban development, it is found that though we are a landthirst city with a growing economy, we have sufficient land for future development, and at the same time keep the older parts of our city intact. A more desirable living environment can be achieved when the value of conservation is made known to the public and together with a concerted effort from both public and private sectors towards conservation. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/157847 |
