THE 'SECRETS' OF SINGAPOREAN STUDENTS' ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT: THE EFFECT OF PERSONALITY, MOTIVATION AND PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT ON ACADEMIC RESILIENCE. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Given that Singaporean students often perform well academically despite facing academic setbacks and challenging life circumstances, it is important to explore what drives these students to be academically resilient. In this study, three factors that influence academic resilience were examined, namely: students' level of academic motivation, their perceived level of their parents' involvement and their personality traits. 700 primary and secondary school students completed a set of questionnaire comprising a series of individual and family variables that were complemented by academic achievement data drawn from school records. Results showed that academic motivation mediates the conscientiousness-to-academic resilience and openness-to-academic resilience relationship and that parental involvement significantly predicts academic resilience. These variables are important promotive factors in propagating academic resilience. However, academic resilience did not predict outcome grade, beyond the contribution of SES and gender. Possible explanations, implications, and future directions were discussed in consideration of these results. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/157691 |
