Abstract: Scholars usually focus on population growth when measuring urban growth under the theory of new urban economics. City attributes, technology and geographic features are thought to be important for growth. But population growth will be harder to reflect urban growth when the labor market is restricted in China. Our study finds 1) The supply shock from labor market will decrease the growth of wage and GDP which reflect productivity and added value separately; 2) High wage level will be more attractive to high skilled labors while GDP creates normal job opportunities; 3) Technology has significant positive effects on China urban growth, geographic factors affect more on productivity rather than GDP alone.
