dc.description.abstract | Manganese catalyzed epoxidation of styrene with bicarbonate-H2O2 buffer solution in DMF was studied using 13C NMR, online Raman, in-situ FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques. The Raman spectrum of the active epoxidizing agent was elucidated by applying Band Target Entropy Minimization (BTEM) chemometric method on the online Raman data. Analysis of the characteristic vibration modes of this complex indicates the possible formation of a manganese complex containing a bidentate peroxocarbonate side-on moiety which is further supported by 13C NMR and UV-Vis results. This manganese-peroxocarbonate complex is responsible for active oxygen transfer during epoxidation as it was elucidated as a single compound co-existing with styrene in the same mixture when the reaction is ongoing. Based on all evidence, a plausible reaction mechanism was proposed and kinetic studies were carried out using in-situ ATR data to determine the overall reaction rate constant which is useful for scale-ups and reactor design. | |
