Recently, the emergence of organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been one of the most exciting developments in photovoltaics because of the promising high-efficiency potential of the perovskite materials. In record time, the photovoltaic conversion efficiency has increased from a few percents to over 23%. We derive mathematical models of PSCs including the transport of free carriers, carrier recombination, and optical generation for elucidating the intricate relations between physics, morphology, and performance in PSCs. The models can perform loss analysis to identify the dominant recombination mechanisms inside the cell, as well as predict the optimum device performance. Subsequently, sensitivity analysis is conducted through Monte Carlo simulation whence the most critical parameters influencing the cell efficiency are identified. Furthermore, a multiscale modeling framework based on the principles of volume-averaging is presented, which aims to capture the microscopic features of the mesoporous layer morphology within a macroscopic meso-structured PSC model.
