Abstract: Using the Globe to Globe Festival held in London in 2012 as a starting point, this thesis explores the significance of the Ashtar Theatre’s participation at the festival. Adopting a historical approach, this thesis identifies the place of the Ashtar Theatre’s position in the history of Palestinian theatre and discusses a case study from its current body of work to understand the importance of Ashtar’s performance of Richard II at the Globe to Globe Festival. In light of these earlier analyses, this thesis then examines and critiques Ashtar’s current approaches to theatre, and makes recommendations for a Palestinian theatre that can move more decidedly in the direction of Israeli-Palestinian reconciliation.
