dc.description.abstractExtended Kalman filter (EKF) is a widely studied chaotic synchronization scheme. In the first part of this thesis, divergence behavior of the EKF based synchronization when it is applied to Ikeda map is analyzed. Nonlinear filters with lesser approximation errors (such as the unscented Kalman filter, particle filter and nonlinear predictive filter) are proposed for chaotic synchronization applications. Numerical and analytical evaluations are carried out to assess the performance of the new synchronization schemes. The second part of this thesis deals with the application of chaotic dynamics in secure communications. Two new schemes are proposed: (i) a symbolic dynamics based secure digital communication and (ii) a code division multiple access scheme with double spreading based on the 2-D Ikeda map. Bit error performances of the new schemes are numerically obtained for different channel conditions.
