Abstract: With the rapid development of technology, an increasing number of western movies and TV programs have been flowing into the Chinese market. Foreign movies have been an indispensable part of entertainment in our modern society. Thus, subtitle translation plays an important role in transcending the barriers between different languages and cultural backgrounds. Compared to the West, however, China’s current study on subtitle translation is more backward and inadequate. The lack of unified translation theory and strict evaluation standard in subtitle translation in China imply that guiding theory is greatly needed on improving the quality of subtitling translation. It is, therefore, my aim to arouse public attention and concerns towards subtitle translation, as well as to explore a set of feasible principles and strategies to provide guidance and reference in the field of translation studies in China. Subtitle translation of the Disney animated film Mulan will be used as the research sample, this paper analyses the characteristic of translation from the perspective of Functional Equivalence theory, which emphasise the target language receptors should understand the translated text as original language receptors do in the original text. This paper is composed of 5 chapters: (1) Introduction of the thesis background, including literature review on the fields of translation studies, as well as the innovations of the paper. (2) Introduction of Functional Equivalence theory, and the feasibility of the application to subtitling translation. (3) Summary of the characteristics of movie subtitle in Mulan. (4) Formulation of the corresponding translation strategies in Mulan based on Functional Equivalence theory. Comparative study on the source and target text of the film Mulan was conducted from lexical, cultural, pragmatic, and rhetoric perspectives. (5) Conclusion and limitations of the paper.
