dc.description.abstract | Singapore is a multilingual state with a multiplicity of languages and dialects from various ethnic groups. The government has carried out language engineering which has contributed greatly to the language shift phenomena in Singapore. As Fishman (1972) argues, language shift is made up of individual’s language choice, and is a result of socio-cultural norms when investigated in a specific domain. This study examines the patterns of language use in Singapore Chinese family, with a three-generation Hainanese family as a case study. It reveals different language uses between different generations, as well as within each generation; the first two generations tend to converse mainly in dialects while the third generation uses Mandarin. Policies and social factors in the local linguistic environment such as the Speak Mandarin Campaign and the Bilingual Policy carried out by the government are also looked at, particularly its influence on language choice in family conversations, influence on language attitudes of the study participants towards their own dialect, as well as mixing of different codes in a single utterance. With differing language use of family members and different language repertoire between generations, an analysis of the functions of code-switching is also carried out, to reveal how differing language repertoire serves as a basis for code-switching to carry out discourse-related functions such as changing conversation participant constellation. | |
