Abstract: Most of the previous studies on the Chinese dynamic auxiliary word “Le” and situation auxiliary word “Le” have been focusing on the time of generation, judgment standard as well as the formation process. Though some of the scholars have noticed the importance of grammaticalization, they were mainly focusing on describing the process of how “Le” grammaticalizes. None has yet researched on the mechanism and inducement of “Le”’s grammaticalization. Thus, this thesis aims to do a revisit towards the derivation of the Chinese aspect marker “Le1” and “Le2”, and attempting to figure out what are the mechanism and inducement of the grammaticalization of “Le1” and “Le2” respectively. Details are as follows: Chapter One, this thesis will discuss the definition of “Le1” and “Le2” as well as their usage in the modern Chinese language. Follow by the methods of this study and the research summary of “Le1” and “Le2”. Chapter Two, this thesis will focus on the usage and distribution of “Le” before the Tang Dynasty which includes the period of two Han dynasties and the period of Six Dynasties. At the same time, I will compare the condition of usage of “Le” together with the other four accomplishment verbs “Yi”, “Qi”, “Jing”, “Bi”. Chapter Three, I will split the chapter into two major sections. Section one will be focusing on the derivation of “Le1” as well as its mechanism of grammaticalization. I will compare “Le1” together with the four phase complements “Que”, “Jiang”, “Qu”, “De”, and attempt to find out why only “Le” managed to grammaticalized in the end. Section two will be focusing on the derivation of “Le2” as well as its mechanism of grammaticalization. I will compare the condition of usage of “Le” and “Yi” located at the end of sentences, and attempt to find out why “Le” grammaticalized instead of “Yi”. Chapter Four, I will discuss the mechanism of grammaticalization of “Le1” and “Le2” respectively according to the evidence provided from the previous chapters. Chapter Five, finally this thesis will conclude with a summary of the previous chapters and a review of the researched topic.
