dc.description.abstract | The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells has rapidly improved to beyond 10% over the past few years. PCE is not only dependent on the efficiency of charge carriers generation and transport, but also strongly dependent on the efficiency of charge carrier extraction at contacts. However, while rapid progress with the development of new donor and acceptor materials gave better absorption and carrier mobilities in the photoactive layer, the physics of contact effects on solar cells is still not well understood. In this thesis, I demonstrated the contact optimization that improves fill factor and open-circuit voltage of state-of-the-art solar cells using ultrahigh work function (UHWF) self-compensated p-doped hole collection layers. The physics of built-in potential that is fundamentally determined by contacts is discussed by light-dependent and temperature-dependent photo-inversion current studies. Finally, I demonstrated an in-device bias-induced electrochemical n-doping mechanism that fundamentally alters the electrical behaviour of the contacts. | |
