Abstract: In this thesis an attempt has been made to evaluate nonlinear vibro-acoustic/ultrasonic methods for detection of delamination and kissing bond defects in composite laminates. It has been demonstrated through a series of experiments and simulations that while delaminations and dry contact kissing bonds can be detected with nonlinear vibro-acoustic/ultrasonic procedures, detection of liquid layer kissing bonds is not straightforward. A methodology based on linear vibro-acoustic/ultrasonic methods for detection of liquid layer kissing bonds has been developed and demonstrated for composite beam specimens both experimentally and numerically. A combination of nonlinear vibro-acoustics/ultrasonics together with the new technique can provide an efficient and reliable method for detection of kissing bond defects in composite laminates.
