Abstract: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) refers to a condition where fetus fails to achieve growth genetic potential due to placenta insufficiency where inadequate oxygen and nutrients are transferred to fetus. In this thesis, we had performed a series of study that characterized the fluid and solid biomechanics in IUGR pregnancy by looking at the umbilical vessels and placenta tissue mechanics. We showed that (i) the in vivo biomechanical environments were very similar in both the normal and IUGR umbilical vessels, (ii) placental artery distensibility was altered in IUGR and (iii) IUGR placenta was stiffer. The increased stiffness of IUGR placenta suggested the potential used of ultrasound elastography as an alternative technique in diagnosing IUGR so as to improve its detection. We also proposed an improved way in performing ultrasound strain elastography in detecting IUGR placenta and had shown that our proposed method had higher accuracy and precision.
