dc.description.abstract | A negative family environment, known as Expressed Emotion (EE) has been shown to be a robust predictor of outcome in chronic schizophrenia in Western countries. There is some doubt however over this concepta??s ability to predict outcome in first-episode and Asian populations. Further, although research has been ongoing into the concept of EE for over forty years, there is still no clear picture of what contributes to a family becoming high EE. This study investigated these issues in a sample of 161 patients and 91 caregivers. The results showed that EE was able to predict outcome at one year. Caregivers with more external attributions, more positive appraisal of the situation, higher optimism and more active coping were found to be lower in EE. This study highlighted the importance of looking at cross-cultural concepts such as collectivism when designing scales and interventions for this group of patients and caregivers. | |
