This thesis explores the phenomena of anaphoric binding in Malay. The exploration aims to find a unifying analysis that would account for all anaphoric binding in Malay. Cross-linguistic comparison with Mandarin yields several parameters from which reflexives in Malay are investigated. These parameters include Subject Orientation, C-Command Condition and the Maximal Clause Effect. One of the findings indicates that out of the seven initially identified anaphors, only four exhibit true binding properties and thus can be regarded as anaphoric elements
