Abstract: Ethyl benzoyl acetate had been prepared by condensation between ethyl acetate and ethyl benzoate. The infrared spectra of the diketone showed a strong absorption in the 1700 cm-1 region which is due to free >C= 0 absorption. In the copper complex this band disappeared and is being replaced by two new bands in between 1500-1600 cm-1. Adduct formation of the copper chelate with pyridine had also been studied. The result showed that ethylbenzoyl acetate has a constant of 78.7 ± 4.0 which is much higher than those previously observed for the analogous ß - diketone system.
