ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Continuing increases in the areal density of hard disk drives will be limited by thermal instability of the thin film medium. Patterned media have been suggested as a means to overcome this limitation and to enable recording densities of 1 Tb/in2 and beyond. In this study, we proposed a one-step method to fabricate the patterned nano-structure, which named nano-scaled phase transition method. Cobalt-carbon based thin films were used to produce nano-structures on because of their unique physical properties and structure. It will change from a non-magnetic material to a ferromagnetic material upon thermal treatment. Therefore, by subjecting the film under nano-scaled E-beam radiation, which acts as a thermal source, we can produce an array of magnetic nano-structures. Compared to the conventional methods, this method shows advantages of relative simplicity and cleanliness.
