Title: | EFFECT OF SUGAR ALCOHOLS ON STREPTOCOCCUS MUTANS AND CANDIDA ALBICANS MIXED-SPECIES BIOFILMS | Authors: | ALLY CHAN | Keywords: | Xylitol, Sorbitol, Streptococcus mutans, Candida albicans, biofilms, caries | Issue Date: | 9-Jan-2019 | Citation: | ALLY CHAN (2019-01-09). EFFECT OF SUGAR ALCOHOLS ON STREPTOCOCCUS MUTANS AND CANDIDA ALBICANS MIXED-SPECIES BIOFILMS. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans have shown to be associated with development of dental caries. The therapeutic efficacy of xylitol and sorbitol against both pathogens in a sucrose supplemented environment commonly seen in the oral cavity, has not been adequately investigated. Therefore, the study aimed to examine the effect of xylitol and sorbitol on an in vitro S. mutans, C. albicans mono-species biofilms and mixed species biofilm model in the presence of sucrose. Xylitol and sorbitol demonstrated a significant dose-dependent inhibitory effect on S. mutans biofilms, whereas the inhibitory effect on C. albicans biofilms was not obvious. The presence of 1% sucrose diminished the inhibitory effect of both xylitol and sorbitol on both mono-species biofilms and mixed species biofilms. Xylitol and sorbitol do exert an inhibitory effect on S. mutans and C. albicans biofilms formation. However, this inhibitory effect is repressed by the presence of sucrose in environment. | URI: | http://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/152603 |
