Abstract: Free span refers to a subsea pipeline section that is suspended over the seabed. It is typically one of the weak links of a subsea pipeline, since such a pipe section is vulnerable to Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) leading to possible fatigue damage. A proper evaluation of the pipe-soil interaction on free span shoulder is of significance, as it highly affects the response of a free span pipeline during VIV. The evaluation methods provided in the commonly adopted design guideline (DNV, 2017) appear to rely on either plausible assumptions or simplified conditions that require further examinations. Meanwhile, very few studies have been reported on this specific pipe-soil interaction. The present study includes investigations on the pipe-soil interaction during free span VIV via geotechnical centrifuge experiments. The fundamental behaviors of this pipe-soil interaction are systematically studied. The effects of motion amplitude and initial embedment are discussed. In addition, the pipe-soil interactions with preceding motions and two-dimensional motions are investigated.
