dc.description.abstractRoad infrastructure development in Singapore has evolved to meet higher expectations of road users and Government's vision to achieve a World Class Transport System. It is a challenge to manage such demands and expectations in urbanised and land scarce Singapore. Minimum land take has always been the main constraint in any road development. With such constraint, road upgrading projects are designed to be within the existing traffic corridor, such as the conversion of existing -gradejunctions at into multitier interchanges and construction of elevated roads and viaducts above existing traffic. The construction methodologies for road viaduct projects in Singapore had been influenced by the developments in Europe and United States. Such methodologies are useful to the local environment, where existing traffic have to be minimised during construction and minimum land take. Case studies of such projects showed that the methods are effective in Singapore context. The attempt made to analyse the different types of construction methodologies in terms of method and cost revealed that there are significant cost differences between the two construction methods; balanced cantilever and span-by-span method.
