Abstract: Through the years, global competitiveness has forced many contractors to seriously view international contracting as a source of revenue. One reason why these contractors are less able to diversify into new areas may be that they are technologically less sophisticated than their industrialisedcountry counterparts. The aim of this study is to identify the significant factors affecting the technological development of local contractors and to determine the most appropriate support to promote their effective participation in technological development through a survey. The results obtained from the contractors surveyed were analysed and discussed. The findings of this study will provide an appreciation of the prevailing situation with regard to the contractors' needs and their operating environment, and help to formulate realistic courses of actions. Understanding the importance will assist in the formulation of technology policies by the government.
