Abstract: Benzophenones (BPs) have been used as ultraviolet (UV) light absorbers in various commercial products that are exposed to sunlight. Due to extensive use, BPs can enter water environments, where they can show toxicity effects. Therefore, BPs are regarded as emerging contaminants and they have attracted growing attention over the past decade. However, their occurrence and toxicity in aquatic systems are poorly understood. The objective of this thesis is to investigate the occurrence, fate, and toxicity of BPs in aquatic environments.
