Abstract: This thesis examines the development of an improved DDS, one that is not synthetic in nature but is instead based on the principles of biomimicry from the natural immune system. CDNs were inspired by the discovery of exosomes, endogenously produced nanovesicles that are involved in intercellular communication, and their recent application as a DDS. However, the isolation process of these exosomes is often tedious, complicated and capital-intensive. Conversely, CDNs were developed as a cost-effective alternative to exosomes, where CDNs could be produced in larger quantities, shorter time periods and on-demand, vis-à-vis exosomes based on the same starting materials. The formulation was further optimized and eventually evolved to nano Cell Vesicle Technology (nCVTs) which represent an improved hybrid system combining the classical liposomal systems and the newer cell derived DDS.
