Abstract: This project mainly focuses on controlling the microstructure and magnetic properties of L10 FePt films through engineering the intermediate layer. The work includes four parts. In the first part, 90° contact angle between FePt islands with the intermediate layer was achieved though engineering the MgO-TiON intermediate layer. In the second part, oscillation of feature sizes were realized in FePt/MgO system. The lattice-mismatch-induced microstructure evolution of FePt film and its impact on grain size were investigated. In the third part, the effect of large lattice mismatch on the microstructural and magnetic properties of FePt films were studied using ZrTiN intermediate layers. In the last part, FePt-SiO2-C films with small and uniform grains were achieved on ZrTiN and ZrTiON intermediate layers.
