From 1950s to 1970s, “Nanyang” was replaced by “Southeast Asia (Dongnanya in Chinese translation)”, a term that has been popular since 1940s, in most Chinese publications. However, some Chinese overseas still preferred Nanyang as it carried with it special connotations that are not associated with Dong Nanya. Sometimes the two terms were both used in one article or magazine. One example is a magazine called Nanyang Digest (1960-1973). The publication aimed to promote “Nanyang Consciousness”, but while it has Nanyang in the title, Southeast Asia appear in the majority of the articles. Nanyang Consciousness in Nanyang Digest deserves attention for two reasons: first, it called for regionalism based on nationalism, which was rather popular for newly independent Southeast Asian countries; second, it is different from the official regionalism promoted by these countries using the term “Southeast Asia”.
