The breeding biology of Aerodramus maximus (McClelland) and A.fuciphagus (Thunberg) was compared with the aim of discovering niche separation by gathering nesting, growth and success data. Food and lack of predation were found to affect breeding strategies, leading to slow growth rates and extensive resource storage. A.maximus was found to devote more care to fewer but larger young while A.fuciphagus diluted the care and gambled on greater numbers of young. This showed evolution pushing two related species i n opposite directions.
