dc.description.abstract | Sixteen species of reef organisms from local waters were analysed for nutritional composition and energy content. Results revealed relatively low percentage of protein, lipid and carbohydrate content, especially among gorgonians. Nudibranchs had higher protein and carbohydrate content, ranging from 19.55 - 26.31% dry weight and 25.13 - 28.5% dry weight, respectively. Laboratory bioassays using Halichoeres purpurescens showed that there was no preference for feeds with high contents of protein, lipid or carbohydrate. Comparisons among gorgonians indicated significant differences between species, even those belonging to the same family. There were no differences between species of the same genera, Junceella, and sub-genera, Ctenocella (Umbracella). Low nutrition and energy content may possibly enhance anti-predator mechanisms and may be a selective advantage to gorgonians. | |
