dc.description.abstractCoral reefs health and their capability for self-rehabilitation have been increasingly compromised due to uncontrolled human activities in the past few decades. In an attempt to improve debilitated reefs, distinct intervention techniques have been suggested as ways to promote and enhance natural recover in different situations. The present study was based on the knowledge that coral rubble and crustose coralline algae (CCA) release chemical cues responsible for triggering coral larvae settlement. Grounded rubble and CCA were used in the manufacturing of concrete settlement plates. Their effectiveness as coral recruitment enhancers was assessed while in comparison with three other plate types: plain concrete, sterilized rubble and terracotta tile in four local reefs. Results showed a different coral recruitment rate among plates and the observed reefs. Differences in shape between the plates tested did not alter recruits preference for a position on the plates.
