Abstract: Using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID), this study finds strong support for the intergenerational effect of parental household charitable donations and paternal volunteerism. The effect of maternal volunteerism on the adult child remains unclear. This study also finds differences in the donor profiles for giving to various nonprofit sectors. Testing whether gifts of time and money are complements or substitutes also yields relevant policy implications for solicitors and fundraisers.
