dc.description.abstract | Temptations abound, and strategies to overcome them are similarly plentiful. We chose to look at the situational strategy of precommitment, specifically on the previously unexplored area of how the framing effect influences the decision to precommitment. Due to a lack of prior laboratory studies on precommitment, we decided to explore said effects in the context of the Ultimatum Game (UG). A 2 (framing: gain, loss) × 3 (decision: precommitment, promise, unrelated) × 4 (fairness: 5:5, 4:6, 3:7, 2:8) fully within-subjects experiment was conducted, with acceptance rate of UG offers as the dependent variable. We hypothesised that precommitment rates would be higher in gain conditions than in loss conditions, and that there would be a higher acceptance rates of UG offers in the precommitment conditions than in the other conditions. The results supported these hypotheses, as well as providing several additional findings of interest. We then proposed ways in which these findings can be applied to the real-life application of nudge policy making. Further research could delve more deeply into the potential mechanisms underlying these effects, as well as other effects that could influence the decision to precommit. | |
