dc.description.abstract | Outcomes, which the present naturalistic study aimed to find in a Taiko drumming programme held in a nursing home. Ten elderly participants underwent the ten-week programme, taught by three professional trainers. After the programme ended, trainers qualitatively assessed the outcomes of teaching techniques with and without geragogical principles applied, and quantitatively evaluated the learning progress of each participant. Participants filled out self-report pre- and post-drumming questionnaires on stress, life satisfaction and resilience. Qualitative analysis of the trainers’ responses found evidence for empowerment and motivation as learning outcomes. Persistence in learning and positive mood also emerged as themes. These qualitative results were supported by the quantitative evaluations. However, no significant result was found for the participants’ questionnaire on mental health. The implications and reasons for the respective findings are discussed, and some notes on doing research with elderly in Singapore will be made. | |
