ScholarBank@NUS Repository.||Abstract:||Exposure to a language within the first three years has been found to be important in language acquisition. In Singapore, it is common for children to have exposure to Chinese dialects in childhood. Reduced exposure after the early years, however, have resulted in the attrition of the language. This study aimed to look at the effects of early exposure to the Hokkien dialect by comparing participants with early exposure to Hokkien (target group) and participants with no exposure to any dialects (control group). Experiment 1 investigated the accessibility of the implicit knowledge of Hokkien lexical tones. Results showed that both groups showed comparable improvements in discrimination of Hokkien lexical tones with training, which is contrary to the hypothesis that only the target group should benefit from training. Experiment 2 explored if the early Hokkien exposure has any lasting effects on the implicit processing of English. While it is expected that the target group should be less sensitive to English phonology and syntax but not semantics, results revealed that both groups were no different in their implicit processing of all domains. These findings suggest that the specificity of exposure during the early years might be less important in adult language outcomes.||URI:||http://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/147134|
