Abstract: The work in the thesis concentrates on deriving and using different exact methods to predict wave transmission and reflection by submerged infinite compliant elastic and piezoelectric enabled structures subject to acoustic plane wave incidence. It is also investigated the piecewise piezoelectric enabled structure and its controllability for cancellation of sound reflection. In addition, a refined analytical method is proposed to predict the vibration properties of a beam with passive and/or active constraining layer damping treatments. The contributions of the thesis are: (1) the derivation of governing equations that consider the couplings in a rigorous manner among elastic, piezoelectric and acoustic combinations for either whole piece or piecewise piezoelectric enabled structures subject to plane wave incidence; (2) the development of a refined analytical method for vibration analysis of the beam with passive and/or active constraining layer damping treatments to achieve much more accurate prediction of damping effects compared to the conventional analytical method.
