Socrates asserts in the Crito the claim that ?living well and living justly are the same? as a logical hinge between his arguments. As Socrates does not further explicate on what he means when he equates living well to living justly, this claim can admit of more than one reading. Thus, my paper seeks to examine the relationship between living well and living justly, and the various ways it can be construed. Despite the attractiveness of interpreting this relationship as one of identity, my analysis shows that a necessity-based relationship is the most desirable interpretation that will render Socrates? arguments and final decision to await his death in jail valid.
