dc.description.abstract | Background: Critical appraisal skills (CAS) is one of the key factors in evidence-based practice of healthcare. However, studies have suggested that uptake of CAS by nurses are slow. This problem, if left unresolved, could negatively impact the standard of healthcare provided to patients. Therefore, more systematic approaches should be targeted at this particular problem to formulate a solution. A CAS workshop should be conducted to improve the uptake of skills by nurses. Continuous evaluation and monitoring should be adopted after the workshop to ensure effectiveness of education. Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the (i) impact of a one-day CAS workshop on nurses’ knowledge, attitude, perceived confidence and intention towards application of CAS, (ii) nurses’ satisfaction level with regards to the one-day CAS workshop, and (iii) correlation between the outcome variables Design & Methods: A single group pretest-posttest evaluation study design was adopted. In this study, outcome variables (satisfaction, knowledge, attitude, perceived confidence and intention) were operationalized into a 5-point Likert scale and MCQ-based survey questionnaire. A total of 66 nurses were recruited from National University Hospital using convenience sampling. Participants were requested to complete the pre-workshop questionnaire before the start of the workshop and post-workshop questionnaire immediately after the workshop. Findings: Participants’ knowledge, attitude, perceived confidence and intention to undertake critical appraisal improved significantly post-workshop (all p<0.01). Participants were generally satisfied with the workshop indicated by a satisfaction score of 84.1%. Attitude and perceived confidence were found positively correlated with intention. However, no correlation was found between knowledge and attitude as well as perceived confidence. Conclusion: This study provides valuable information for a better understanding on the impact of CAS workshop on nurses and factors affecting intention for behavioral change. Future mixed-method studies should explore deeper in this aspect to better inform education planner and nursing leaders in promoting critical appraisal among nurses. | |
