Abstract: Hydrogen borrowing methodology is a green method in accessing chiral amines from racemic mixtures of alcohols as it is a redox neutral reaction with water as the only by-product. Through screening different catalysts, iridacyclic complexes were found to be an efficient catalysts for this transformation. Asymmetric tetrahydroquinolines have been successfully made using this method. Amination of alcohols with benzylic and aromatic amines are also demonstrated for more direct and efficient synthesis of useful amine-containing compounds. Lastly, a more atom economy amination process using ammonium salts/ammonia for the synthesis of amines is also investigated.
