dc.description.abstractThe Semantic Map Model (SMM) is a cross-linguistic tool frequently used to describe and illuminate the patterns of multifunctionality of grammatical morphemes across languages (Croft 2000; Haspelmath 2003). More recently, SMM is increasingly used to study the universal semantic network of multifunctional content words. Francois (2008) used SMM to construct a semantic map for the verb “breathe”, while GUO Rui (2013) studied the relationship between lexical verbs related to the semantic meaning of “give” in the Chinese language. In its latest application, ZHANG Ding (2017) constructed a semantic map for the verb “Wear”, wherein semantic roles of nouns for clothing and apparels were employed as its set of functions. This paper analyses ZHANG Ding’s semantic map for “Wear” and discusses how it can be used as a reference point in the construction of semantic maps for nouns. This paper also probes into how the semantic map can be modified to preliminarily reveal the semantic relationship between lexical nouns, using wearables, such as clothing, as example.
