Abstract: Ming novel Xiyou Ji (Journey to the West), the fictional character, Sun Wukong, is represented with various names that come from different cultural and religious backgrounds. These names also embody cultural connotations and symbolic meanings that shaped the character’s image accordingly. Among all, the image of “Wukong” (“Understanding Emptiness”) and “Xinyuan” (“Mind Monkey”) portrayed are most significant in relation to Buddhism thinking. Therefore, the aim of this essay is to find out the relationship between character Sun Wukong and Buddhism. The idea of Kong and meditation in Buddhism is also discussed. Wukong is presented as an image of pursuing Buddhist philosophy, “Emptiness”, even till the end of the journey. This implies the complicated nature of Buddhist idea, “Emptiness”. While for the Mind Monkey, it is presented as an image that has transformed gradually from an untamed ape to a Buddha with complete self-control. It is the journey of Buddhist practice that has shaped Xinyuan into a ‘mind over body’ person such that the heart can finally reach state of perfect peace.
