Abstract: In light of the growing influence of Korean culture in Singapore, this thesis explores how young women living in Singapore imagine and construct their future homes in relation to their current lived spaces and Korean variety shows. Using a multi-?method approach of vision boards, video clips, photographs of home and mapping exercises, it investigates the dialectical relationship between real lived and imagined future homes, and how portrayals of home and gender in the Korean variety shows, “We Got Married” and “The Return Of Superman”, influence the way women living in Singapore (both Singaporean and Korean) negotiate and challenge their gender roles in both their lived and imagined future homes. Building on Lefebvre’s spatial triad, I frame this thesis around a new spatial triad of the home, encompassing real lived homes, imagined future homes and discourses on homes represented in the media, where the three constitute one another and shape how the home, and the gender roles and relations shaped by it, are negotiated, (re)produced and/or challenged. This thesis argues that imaginations of future homes, mediated by Korean variety shows, provide another form of thirdspace that enables women to challenge gendered roles and expectations both now and in the future. Familial homes were investigated to draw out the gender relations usually associated with home.
