dc.description.abstract | Cyanotoxins and taste and odor compounds have raised health concerns and aesthetic issues in drinking water sources worldwide. This study focuses on the occurrence and fate of twelve microcystin variants, cylindrospermopsin, geosmin and 2-MIB in tropical urban waters and the correlation between their concentrations and environmental factors. The thesis comprises three main areas: 1) field monitoring on the occurrence of the target secondary metabolites through monthly and diel monitoring, 2) a controlled laboratory experiment on the fate of cyanotoxins, 3) a mesocosm column study on the fate of taste and odor compounds. The occurrence study was conducted in several local urban reservoirs through three separate surveillance studies to understand the spatial and temporal variations under the influence of tropical environmental factors. To elucidate the mechanisms of natural degradation processes, kinetic studies were conducted in the laboratory and in situ to further investigate the decay processes through several proposed pathways and further evaluate the contribution of each pathway. The information obtained from this study provides a profound understanding of the occurrence and fate of these cyanobacterial secondary metabolites in tropical aquatic ecosystems. | |
