dc.description.abstractWith an increasing amount of documents being scanned and archived in the form of digital images, Document Image Retrieval, as part of information retrieval paradigm, has been attracting a continuous attention among the Information Retrieval (IR) communities. This thesis presents a word image coding technique that extracts features from each word object and represents them using a feature code string. On top of this, two retrieval applications are implemented. One is an experimental web-based retrieval system that efficiently retrieves document images online from digital libraries given a set of query words. The other is a search engine for imaged documents in PDF files. In particular, a plug-in is implemented in Acrobat Reader and performs all the preprocessing and matching procedures online when the user inputs a query word. The matching word objects will be identified and marked in the PDF files.
