Abstract: To facilitate people in regulating their physical activity, fitness applications (or apps) with SNS have become increasingly popular. However, there is little understanding of the effects of these apps on users’ physical activity. Besides, there is little understanding of why users share their exercise data or browse others' data in these fitness apps that is a prerequisite for social influence through SNS to work. Motivated thus, this thesis conducted three studies to address the following research questions: (1) How do the various features and user behavior of fitness apps influence users' physical activity? (2) What influences users to share their physical activity data through fitness apps? (3) What influences users to browse others' physical activity information on fitness apps? Research models were developed based on proper theoretical frameworks and tested with both survey and app data collected from 2 popular fitness apps. These studies contribute to both theory and practice.
