dc.description.abstractThe Semantic Web approach proposed by W3C is regarded as the next generation of Web. It extends the current web by providing meaningful information and makes it easier for computers and people to work in cooperation. The consistency of the Semantic Web ontology is very important. However, the existing tools for reasoning about SW ontology are still primitive. We believe that mature theorem proving tools, such as Isabelle, can contribute to the reasoning phase. In order to make use of Isabelle, SW ontology in DAML+OIL language is encoded into Isabelle logic definitions (in Isar). After the encoding, some useful Isabelle lemmas are provided for further supporting. At the next step a program is developed to transform SW ontology into the encoded Isabelle logics. With some intermediate lemmas we can use Isabelle to prove the consistency of the SW ontology in both class level and instance level.
