dc.description.abstract | This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the designed six-week peer-led self-management programme (PLSMP) for people with schizophrenia in enhancing recovery outcomes. A randomised controlled trial was conducted at three community psychiatric service centres with a cluster sample of 122 participants. The PLSMP was developed based on systematic review conducted, combining peer-led approach and diagnosis-specific self-management contents. The linear mixed model analysis showed that participants experienced PLSMP reported significant improvement in levels of empowerment, perceived recovery, social support and reduction in symptom severity over six-month follow-up. Thematic analysis showed PLSMP was beneficial in empowering participants in motivation, strength and practical skills in self-management, and rebuilding social network. It was the first study of its kind in Singapore and Asia. The finding of this study supported that peer-led approach could be used as ajunctive intervention to enhance recovery of people with schizophrenia and reduce healthcare cost in a long run. | |
