dc.description.abstract | Citrus grandis rind and Carica papaya seeds were applied as sorbents in envelopes to remove Methylene Blue, Brilliant Green and Reactive Black 5 dyes in water. Papaya seeds were found to have excellent sorption capacity. Results obtained in this study showed that formaldehyde preserved pomelo peels could match the performance of papaya seeds in this aspect. Dye-laden sorbents were subjected to vermi-composting and desorption. Dye-containing water from desorption was treated with a single-chamber air-cathode Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC). The MFC was able to treat water containing dyes and associated textile wastewater pollutants. Despite dye-laden sorbents could contain toxins to earthworms, simple sorbent pre-treatment steps together with dye sorption, and in certain cases also with subsequent desorption, allowed sorbents prepared from pomelo peels and papaya seeds to be treated using vermi-techniques. It was also found that papaya seeds could function as bio-mordant to improve colouration on different substrates. | |
