dc.description.abstract | Organisational citizenship behaviours (OCBs) have been known to yield or be linked to a variety of positive organisational outcomes (Podsakoff, MacKenzie, Paine, & Bachrach, 2000). Given this, many researchers have devoted themselves to studying the antecedents of OCBs. However, there is a dearth of research on the influence momentary variables can have on OCBs. The current study hopes to address this by studying the impact state gratitude can have on the performance of OCBs over the course of one workday. Moreover, I investigate if state gratitude’s influence on OCBs can be explained by gratitude’s ability to facilitate goal contagion. I recruited 197 working professionals to complete a two-part online survey. The first part involved the emotion induction and goal priming while the second part involved reporting one’s behaviours on an OCB measure as well as a general teamwork measure. Based on the results I got, I offer two learning points from my study: that gratitude can impact workplace behaviours via goal contagion and that its ability to facilitate goal contagion might work better for cooperative rather than competitive goals. My study adds to OCB and emotion literature as well as highlights the benefits of incorporating gratitude into one’s work culture. | |
