Abstract: Empirical evidence indicates that despite the traditional restrictive views of Islamic jurisprudence on women’s social activities, the level of women’s incorporation into jihadi organizations is growing rapidly in both numbers and roles around the world. This thesis argues that the increasing incorporation of women and their diversity of roles reflects a strategic logic –jihadi groups integrate women to enhance organizational success. To explain this logic, the thesis develops a new typology of jihadi organizations: operation-based and state building jihadi organizations. By using this classification, the thesis argues that the strategic logic of operation-based jihadi organizations in incorporating women lays in the tactical advantages women provide them. On the other hand, as state building jihadi groups have morphed beyond mere militant organizations, their strategic logic of women is geared towards addressing the challenges facing a functioning state. This ultimately provides a conducive environment for the incorporation of women in diverse roles.
