dc.description.abstract | Prior research has examined how defensive confidence predicts the seeking of information. However, no research has investigated the extent to which defensive confidence predicts individuals' attitude certainty when they are able to defend their attitudes after the presentation of information. The present study examines how people who are high vs. low in their defensive confidence differ in post-message attitude certainty depending on whether the counterattitudinal message is matched or mismatched to the basis of the attitude object. Results of two studies showed that among low defensive confidence participants, attitude certainty of those who read the matched messages (cognitive/affective message about the cognitive/affective attitude object) was higher than attitude certainty of those who read the mismatched messages (affective/cognitive message about the cognitive/affective attitude object). In contrast, among high defensive confidence participants, message type did not have an effect on participants' attitude certainty. Implications of the present study are discussed. | |
